About Katie



Hello and welcome to my blog! I am 29 years old and currently living in Northern Virginia as a single mama with my sons Kevin III and Kyler. Here is a little bit about me and the things that I love!





Running is my first love! I fell in love with running during college. It began as a way to lose the freshman 15 (or 30!) that I gained while indulging in typical college activities, and somehow blossomed into a full-blown love affair. It started with me running on the treadmill at the gym to “burn off” the Chinese take-out and beer that I drank the night before, and now it is something I truly could not live without. I love the way running makes me feel and how it challenges me every day. It helps me think clearer, have more energy, and it inspires me to be a better, healthier person inside and out. My running journey has definitely not been an easy one, but through it all I have run many races including 20 half marathons and 10 full marathons. One of my goals in life is to run a marathon in each state and eventually every continent. One reason I wanted to start this blog is to document my running and training and all the highs and lows that come with it.  In 2014 I became certified by the RRCA as a running coach. I want to share my passion with others and help them achieve goals that they only ever dreamed were possible.

Mommy Life

I welcomed my first child Kevin Troy III on September 12, 2012, and my second child, Kyler James on May 22, 2015. I had wonderful and active pregnancies and was able to run up until delivery both times. Since then I have been on a new journey to figure out this thing called parenthood. In February 2016 I began yet another new chapter when I separated from my husband and became a single mama. All of my pregnancy/parenting posts and weekly updates can be found here.

Teaching is what brought me here to Northern Virginia. I grew up outside of Philadelphia and went to college at Penn State University. After graduating in 2008, I knew that teaching jobs were slim to none in Pennsylvania. Since I had nothing to lose, I decided to pick up and move to Virginia to take a job teaching second grade. Since then I have bounced around a bit. After teaching second grade I was a Title I Reading Teacher, and then I taught fifth grade. I finished my Masters degree in August 2012, and now I work with grades K-5 as a Reading Specialist. I love what I do because it is so rewarding to be able to help a child learn to read. I honestly cannot think of anything more important than being a literate adult. Literacy opens the door to future success in life and I am happy to support kids in getting there.  Running and being active helps me deal with the stress of work and find balance.

  6. I love your blog! I found it looking for running in third trimester – I’m exactly 1 year behind you- due sept 15 and still “running” at 33 weeks. I did the same thing with my Garmin too-so had to laugh at that. Enjoy reading how motherhood has changed your running just to see what I can expect. Thanks!

  7. Good for you for getting up and running that early and getting it in despite the difficult circumstances! I’m not sure if you have a Moms Run This Town group in your area but there is one in Gainesville for sure. I am a member of the Vienna, the Fairfax/ Annandale,and the Tyson’s group (I live right in the middle of all of them) and have been able to find running partners many mornings with other momma’s who need to get up long before dawn or the run just wont happen. I never knew people were that crazy until I because that crazy person. 😉 Very inspiring!

  12. Hi there! I just found your blog and am SO happy about it! I am 14 weeks pregnant and plan to run through my pregnancy as well ( I am also a first grade teacher!!) 🙂 I was wondering if you could suggest a good sports bra and running capris to invest in? I am tired of having to wear two sports bras for every run I do…. Thank you so much for already inspiring me to continue being active throughout this baby growing process!

    • So glad you found me Sara, and congrats on your pregnancy! It’s definitely a challenge finding good running clothes while pregnant. I really like Moving Comfort’s bras (www.movingcomfort.com). There are a few styles that I have found to be great and supportive during pregnancy (I’m up to a 36D already!)- especially the Rebound Racer and the Juno style. For running capris, I really love my For Two Fitness capris. They’re a little expensive, but since you are so early in your pregnancy still you’ll definitely get a lot of wear out of them! They are really comfortable and flattering, and have a belly panel that you can fold down or up once your belly grows. I’ve just started to pull it up over my belly now at 28 weeks. I am a size 4-6 pre pregnancy and ordered a small. They fit well but in the beginning before I had a real belly they shifted down a little bit when I would run. Now that I’ve grown that is not a problem anymore.
