Mom & Baby: 23/24 Months

It’s a good thing I am finished writing these monthly updates because I have been terrible about getting them done on time! However, I really am so happy to have them. I love capturing his growth and development each month and I enjoy looking back on them. I can’t believe Kevin is now 2 years old! Here’s the recap of his 23rd and 24th month of life (finally!).

Baby

At his 2 year appointment Kevin was 37 inches tall (97th percentile) and 28 pounds 4 ounces (55th percentile)! He’s basically a tall and skinny kid, just like I was and just like a lot of my family members are/were when they were young. He’s wearing mostly 2T tops and 3T bottoms since he is so tall!

That moment when your toddler screams “balls!” as you try to walk into Target…

Probably the most awesome development in the last couple of months was that he started to talk in full sentences. It started one day out of nowhere. He said, “I want some toast,” and we just stared at him in awe. He’s been saying two and three word phrases for a while, but that took us by surprise! Now he’s saying longer sentences all day long, and most of the time we’re pretty good at understanding them- although sometimes we aren’t so sure what he’s trying to communicate. He also doesn’t always pronounce words correctly, which leaves us laughing sometimes. Our favorite was the way he was pronouncing “fruit” for a little while. This made grocery shopping interesting, when he would yell, “I want fruit!” Watch and you’ll see what I mean 🙂

He’s also learned to say thank you, please, love you, bye bye, etc. without much prompting, which we love. Our favorite sentence that he’s come to say frequently is, “I want to go running.” I mean, really?!? Does it get any better than that? 🙂

He’s become obsessed with football (fookaball), which makes his daddy very happy and proud. Although daddy doesn’t like when he wears mommy’s team’s jersey!

Kevin’s favorite things currently include puppies (and all animals really), anything transportation related (planes, trucks, cars, trains, boats, etc), Elmo, Mickey, and being outside. He also loves books, and this summer we started going to the library. I love seeing his little thinking face as he picks up a book and decides if he’s interested in it or not.

He definitely has his own little silly personality. He loves doing things that he knows will make us laugh and then says, “Kevin so funny.”

Along with the improved language has come fewer temper tantrums, which I think is because he’s able to express himself better. That’s not to say we don’t still have them- because we DEFINITELY do! But we’re at least able to talk through them a little bit now and he recovers much more quickly.

Basically the good times are really good, and the difficult times are REALLY difficult. There is not much gray area these days. He can go from happy to angry and back again in about two seconds flat. See below for proof…

He definitely knows what he wants and doesn’t want, and makes it very clear for us to understand. I’ve learned this the hard way a few times this summer. For example, the difference between a good and bad grocery store trip is whether or not we get to use the “beep beep” cart.

Kevin is VERY affectionate. We have been like this with him since day 1, always giving him hugs and kisses. We love it and so does he. I read somewhere that little boys receive significantly less affection from their parents than little girls do, which can lead to relationship and other issues when they get older. So we make sure to be affectionate and tell him we love him every day. However now he tries to hug and kiss everyone! Especially his best friend Leighton. He loves her so much.

Leighton is actually the daughter of my good friend Chanda who I run with often. I took birth classes with her and our teacher was my doula Marisa, who is also a good friend now. All 3 of us were pregnant at the same time and had our babies weeks apart. Now they’re growing up so fast, I can hardly believe it! We are selfishly very sad because both Marisa and Chanda will be moving away soon. Marisa and her family are moving to Seattle and Chanda and her family are moving to Germany. We’re going to miss them so much, but we hope to be able to visit them within the next few years!

Kevin’s appetite comes and goes at this age. Some days he wants to eat like a horse and some days he refuses food, even if it’s his favorites. One thing he will never turn down is fruit. He calls most fruit “apples.” He is still loving his morning smoothies and asks for it as soon as he wakes up every day. He also loves pizza, pasta, chickpeas, peanut butter, cheese, pancakes, and toast.

He LOVES to help us- whether we are cleaning, cooking, working outside, etc. He really loves to be involved in everything we’re doing and he loves to learn. Every time we are cooking in the kitchen he will drag a chair over so he can climb up and help, and he insists on putting our produce into the bags at the grocery store so we can take it home.

He has learned so much over the last few months, mostly due to his awesome daycare. He can sing the ABC song (for the most part), and he can count up to 5, sometimes higher. Sometimes if we alternate numbers he can get up to 10. He also is starting to identify colors. We do a lot of learning at home too with books, puzzles and his toys. His favorite toy is currently his train set, which Kevin’s mom got from a friend for free. It’s a huge wooden set and it’s amazing! Sometimes I think I have more fun with it than he does!

He loves to sing songs. His favorite songs are Twinkle, Twinkle, Happy Birthday, Up and Down (from swim class), You Are My Sunshine, Happy by Pharrell, and All About That Bass by Megan Trainor. He likes to mix them up and do a remix of all the songs put together. Also, side note, pretty sure he’s going to think it’s his birthday every day from now on!

This month was special because we took our first BIG trip across the country to visit family in Oregon. It was amazing and challenging all rolled into one. You can read all about our trip here (Part 1- Portland, Part 2- Bend).

We also went to visit my family in Pennsylvania a couple of times. While we were there we also took a trip to Dutch Wonderland, which was Kevin’s first “amusement park” experience. The park is geared toward toddlers and young children so it was perfect! We went with a group of teachers from my school and their kids and it was a lot of fun.

Since we are 100% done with breastfeeding as of two months ago, Kevin has started taking over nighttime duties. He’s always done bath time, but now he puts him to bed too, which has been amazing. For almost 2 years he only wanted me at bedtime and it would take me 30+ minutes to get him down. Now my husband takes him in his room, rocks him for a few minutes and sings him Twinkle Twinkle, and then he puts him in his crib and he passes right out. So nice!

I love the special bond he has with his daddy!

We started swim lessons in late July and although it took a while for him to get used to it, he is loving it now (most of the time). It’s been really cool to see his progress and to watch him get more comfortable in the water. He even goes underwater now without freaking out. Both Kevin and I have gotten a chance to participate in class with him and it’s a lot of fun.

He really loves water in general, and I am so happy that we were able to have so much fun at the pool, splash pad and ocean this summer!

It was a little rough at first when he started back at daycare full-time. There were many tears shed by both Kevin and me. But luckily now he’s back in the routine and is excited to go “Nanny’s house” every morning. We feel so lucky to have him spend his days at a place where he is so well taken care of and loved.

He has a few friends at daycare he really loves, especially his buddy Athan who is only 2 weeks younger than him. They are like two peas in a pod!

We are also so excited because Kevin’s cousin Austin also started going to daycare with him. He is only 6 months younger than Kevin. I’m so happy they will be getting to spend so much time together!

His sleep is pretty good, although once he started back at daycare his naps started to be more inconsistent. When he was at home with me he was taking one afternoon nap of 2-3 hours. At daycare it’s more like 1 to 2 hours, probably because it’s a different environment with more kids and there’s a lot more going on. On rare occasions he will fight his nap entirely or only sleep for 3o minutes, then this happens…

As far as potty training… we’re working on it. At home he is not really interested in the potty. We take him in the bathroom with us when he wants to and he has a little potty he can sit on, but he’s only peed on there once or twice at home. At daycare he has actually peed on the potty many times. I think it’s because there are more kids there who are currently potty training, so he’s more exposed to it there and willing to try. We aren’t pushing it yet because he just turned two, but I think he’s on the right track because he will go sometimes. He also does not like having a poopy diaper and asks us to change it immediately. We’ll get there!

Mom

I can’t even explain how amazing I felt after having the summer off with Kevin. It was exactly what I needed- mentally, emotionally and physically. I was able to relax and focus on my son, while also still sending him to daycare once a week for his socialization and also for my own sanity 🙂

Mommy's first day of school

Mommy’s first day of school

I think having this time helped me refocus on my priorities and it helped me deal with having to leave my school and move to a new one so unexpectedly. I’m not sure if I have blogged about this yet, but I ended up getting destaffed from the school I have worked at for the past 6 years. Our enrollment numbers were too low and my principal has to lose 4 staff members, including myself. I was really upset at first to leave such my close-knit school family, but I ended up getting a reading specialist position at another school. I have to say, I don’t usually like change, but I am loving my new school. Sometimes you don’t realize how badly you needed a change until you actually make one. Everything happens for a reason!

During my time off I made sure we kept busy and did a lot of fun things, but we also spent some days just snuggling together. I reminded myself to enjoy these moments while they last.

Physically I don’t think I’ve ever felt better than I currently do or- at least it’s been a LONG time! I spent the whole summer streaking and ended up running the most mileage that I’ve done since before pregnancy, which felt great! I also started a running group that has been SO NICE – especially since we are all mommies and can relate to each other very well. This past month I started going to Body Pump again twice a week, which has also made me feel stronger and more confident. I’m in a good place right now with my body and my running and excited to see what the future holds.

I can’t believe that two years ago I was writing about Kevin and what he was doing at only a few weeks old. Time truly does go so fast. I am so proud of the little man that he is becoming! However, he’s not too big to snuggle with mommy. I’ll hold onto that as long as I can 🙂

The next update I write about Kevin will probably be at 2 1/2 years old. We’ll see how much he changes between now and then!
