This weekend I ran a very special race. My friends and family participated in the Purple Stride 5K in memory of my mom, on the 10 year anniversary of her death. Our team, Strides for Staci, raised over $1,100 and the entire event in Wilmington, Delaware raised over $100,000 for pancreatic cancer research. It was an amazing day and a perfect way to celebrate my mom’s life.
I was worried I would be very emotional and sad the entire day, but it was actually the opposite. The only time I found myself getting teary eyed was when I was pinning the “I am here in honor of Staci Allen” card on Kevin’s back.
The rest of the day I really did feel happy and couldn’t stop smiling as we ran for my mom and talked about our memories of her.
There were so many highlights of the day- running with my sister as she got a new PR, getting to run with a friend from college who I haven’t seen in years, laughing and sharing stories with the friends and family I grew up with, seeing purple everywhere (my mom’s favorite color)- just to name a few.
My dad did an amazing job taking pictures of everything and I really think they tell the story of the day better than my words can. So here’s a recap of our special day in photos.
After the race we all headed over to the Iron Hill Brewery on the Wilmington Riverfront for some food and drinks. We sat upstairs on the deck and it couldn’t have been more perfect. It really felt like my mom was there shining down on us.
It truly was a perfect, beautiful day spent with family and friends to honor an amazing woman that we all miss so much. I know she would have been so happy and proud to know we all came together to do this for her. This was definitely a day I will never forget!
